Clout nails have large flat heads which prevent them from pulling into or through the material they are nailed into. These nails can be used for a wide variety of interior and exterior woodworking and building purposes.   

They're ideal for nailing ceiling boards to the brandering.   

Slate tiles can be attached to the rafters of a house roof with clout nails.   

Can also be used for making and repairing furniture.
